Sheffield Beer Week celebrates women working in beer

In March, Sheffield Beer Week celebrate its fourth year as a city-wide beer festival and series of beer-focused events occurring throughout the city from 12 – 18th March. 

This year sees a celebration of women working in the beer industry with a brewsters tap takeover event at The Rutland Arms, collaborating brews with Ashover and Welbeck Abbey breweries, working with consumer group the Ladies That Beer and Fem.Ale organiser Erica Horton to host beer tastings.

International Women’s Day on March 8^th and will see Sheffield Beer Week celebrate with a brew-day as part of the run-up activity.

Other activities include a back to beer basics with venues acting as ingredient hubs (malt, hops, water, yeast, adjuncts) and hosting events; continued exploration of the Norwich City of Ale partnership with a city tap takeover and a mini Yorkshire beer photography trail working with photographer, Mark Newton and his Beer Yorkshire project.

On Saturday March 10^th, to launch the week, there will be a new one-day ticketed beer festival, Indie Beer Feast –  celebration of craft beer in the iconic Abbeydale Picture House with brewery bars and great street food.

Liverpool ladies love their beer

We hosted our first ever event in Liverpool, offering a six-course meal with matching beers to an audience of local women – and a handful of men including chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, Graham Evans MP.

The tasting, held at the city’s Old Blind School, was led by award-winning Beer Sommelier Annabel Smith, who guided the audience through six different styles of beer, including brews from two local brewers Mad Hatter and Neptune Brewery. Each beer was accompanied by a complementary food, ranging from cheese and fish to cheesecake and chocolate.

Annabel said, “The response from our guests was overwhelmingly positive; non-beer drinkers had their preconceptions about beer overturned as they found at least one beer they enjoyed and will consider drinking in future. Women already drinking beer broadened their repertoire by trying new styles.

The beer and food matches served to the women of Liverpool were:

• Freedom Pilsner with Welsh Rarebit
• Blue Moon with Smoked Haddock Fishcake with Chorizo (as well as with Terry’s Chocolate Orange)
• Lagunitas IPA with Tandoori Salmon
• Neptune Brewery Abyss Stout with Six-Hour Roasted Lamb
• Mad Hatter Brewery Liverpool Tart Sour Beer with Vimto and blackcurrant cheesecake
• Robinson’s Old Tom with Chocolate Mousse
  

Dea Latis organiser, Lisa Harlow said: “We had great support from the local Ladies That Beer group who meet regularly in Liverpool and I think we converted quite a few beer novices too.

“Many women still have preconceptions about beer, so our events are about trying to bust some of those myths and show that beer doesn’t make you fat, doesn’t have to be served in pint glasses and isn’t all brown and bitter!”

Birkenhead-based CPL Training who sponsored the event also donated a voucher for a free online course about beer styles for every guest.

Looking for the Liver-Beerds

Dea Latis is hosting its first beer and food tasting evening in Liverpool at The Old Blind School on Hardman Street on Thursday 13th April, with doors open from 7.00pm.

Led by the award-winning Beer Sommelier and beer training expert, Annabel Smith, guests will enjoy fascinating insight into women’s involvement in beer and brewing as well as sampling six different courses each matched with a different beer. Annabel will explain how to taste beer and how different styles of beer go well with certain types of food.

With the tasting event on the eve of Liverpool’s Food and Drink festival and the Easter weekend the tasting menu will inevitably include some chocolate! Annabel Said: “People are sometimes amazed about how well chocolate goes with beer but we’ve been eschewing Champagne for a great stout or wheat beer for years!”
